The Tree of Hope in Palermo Fills with Messages and Drawings
The Falcone tree, a national monument of hope and memory, has been enriched with new messages and drawings.
For 33 years, the tree has been a symbol of hope and struggle against the mafia and crime.
Every year, it is filled with papers, colored envelopes, and pieces of fabric with the writings of those who want to leave a mark of rejection against the mafia.
Children from all over Italy have been brought to the tree by their teachers to honor the martyrs of the fight against the mafia.
Some messages were written by children from Palermo schools, others by people from various European countries.
The tree, a Ficus macrophilla, is not affected by the polemics and controversies that accompany the anniversary of the Capaci massacre.
